Cultural Programs
Filipino History
This is not the dry history class you might remember, where you’re asked to systematically memorize dates and names. This is interactive Filipino History taught through arts-based methods. We offer you a history to experience and through it, you may find your own story, too. It’s NOT a version of history to be embarrassed of. It’s our actual history that we can be PROUD of. It’s not a glossed over version where Europeans came and brought ‘civilization’ to the ’savages’. It’s not about how the Americans saved us from the Spanish and the Japanese. Each class has a life of its own to share, so be prepared to learn history through visual art, literature, theatre, dance and songs!
Curriculum developed by Eric Tigley and Alex Felipe.
Conversational Filipino Language
Level 1 and 2, Parent & Child
Our Filipino language classes use a direct method of learning a language. The students focus on CONVERSATIONAL skills in Filipino. Classroom techniques include role-plays, games, songs, pair work, and writing exercises. At the end of the course, students should be able to use Filipino in greetings and situations such as telling time as well as asking and giving directions. Our aim is to equip students who complete each level with Filipino language that describes people, objects, places, narrates an event or simple story; expresses feelings, as well as agreement or disagreement. The Parent & Child version is child-friendly and allows Mom, Dad, and child to learn together!
Curriculum is developed and will be taught by Christine Balmes.
PSL Poetry as our Second Language
Over 4 weeks, these workshops will explore traditional Filipino poetry, like Tanagas and Balagtasans, poets like Jose Garcia Villa, Carlos Bulosan and perhaps some Rizal. Through this series, participants will be introduced to poems that incited revolutions and change. Published Filipino-Canadian poets like Patria Rivera have been known to make a guest appearance. Even celebrated, local poet Dwayne Morgan may pop through and share some insight on his experience as a Toronto Poetry Slam veteran. Most significantly, it will be revealed that Poetry has been a part of who we are since the beginning of time until today and is very much a part of our Filipino fabric.
Curriculum developed by Len Cervantes.
Kultura Filipino Arts Festival
Organized by Kapisanan Philippine Centre in community partnership with Carlos Bulosan Theatre, KULTURA Festival is our signature, annual Filipino arts event. Since 2005, KULTURA has featured outdoor live music, spoken word poetry performances, and an arts & crafts market with goods made by Filipino-Canadian artists available for sale. Inside the KAPISANAN gallery, we mount a visual arts exhibit and theatre readings in our performance space. This year (2011) marks some exciting new additions to KULTURA! The film screening will be co-presented by Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, and we will be holding free arts workshops. Don’t miss it!
KULTURA will be on August 26, 27, 28 – 2011.
*Our workshops are non-refundable.
