Represent! Taken by Cars, the first Filipino band at SXSW 2012
“I believe we are the first Pilipino band to be in SXSW. It was absolutely surreal to see the listing and find our name there, along with Quezon City, Philippines beside it.” – Vocalist Sarah Marco, Taken by Cars (via BakitWhy.com)
Whenever I reconnect with friends from the Philippines, I always ask what band/sound they’re currently into. Over the past few years, the band Taken by Cars has popped up here and there in our conversations. They’ve gotten so much buzz, that they even made it to TIME Asia’s Five New Bands to Watch in the beginning of 2011.
So it’s really no surprise to learn that Taken by Cars is Texas-bound for this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin. With their own brand of dancey-electro-shoegaze-rock-&-new-wave (I know, we shouldn’t bother coming up with genres these days. Labels are for jars, right?), they have gained so many adorning fans in the Philippines, and are well on their way to catapult into the hearts of rest of the world.
Growing Up “Canadian” an interactive arts event is ON Saturday March 3rd
According to Statistics Canada, Filipino-Canadian youth are not, on average, doing well in education and employment after they leave high school. Members from the Filipino Youth Transitions in Canada project are conducting research to find out why this is so.
Initial findings from the research bring to light issues facing Filipino-Canadian youth such as religion; relationships with parents and peers; discrimination; as well as challenges to belonging.
On Saturday, March 3rd, in partnership with Kapisanan, FYTiC will be hosting an intimate showcase featuring Filipino Canadian spoken-word artists, playwrights, and visual artists. These artists will be showcasing artwork that speak to the research themes and what it means for them to grow up “Canadian”.
We invite you to take part in this community event!

You Were Missed At… CLUTCH Vol.4 B R U H A
It’s already been almost two weeks, but it feels like B R U H A just happened yesterday. April 14th was a memorable night for family and friends, as well as the broader arts and Filipino community who came out and celebrated the work of CLUTCH Vol. 4 participants. It was a great opportunity to showcase the great talent and work that was produced over the last six months by these amazing young Filipinas!
KAPISANAN, on behalf of Charise Aragoza, Renelyn Quinicot, Victoria Marie, Victoria Bacnis, Diane Guison, and Maureen Mendoza, would like to thank everyone who took part in this unbelievable experience.
And remember, if you haven’t checked out the visual art exhibit yet, you have until this week until it wraps up!
