7th Annual KULTURA Festival: Visual Art Exhibit Call Out

Jeepney - an interactive piece by Eric Quebral KULTURA 2011, "Ka"

This is a call out for proposal submissions for individual artists or collectives to submit NEW work to be part of the KAPISANAN’s 7th KULTURA Filipino Arts Festival slated to open Friday August 17, 2012.

Proposals must include work that will be part of the KAPISANAN gallery in Kensington Market AND/OR  part of KAPISANAN’s website virtual gallery.

The curatorial theme for KULTURA 2012 exhibit will be Pamahiin/Ritual. This exhibit will explore the imprint of Filipino superstition and rituals around them. These ‘superstitions’ or beliefs [often familial or regional in origin] still live in our everyday experiences as Filipino-Canadians.  Beyond literal images of the duende (dwarf or mischievous elf), or a pamahiin* when travelling at night, the new works selected in this exhibit will look to decipher these cultural signifiers, and the adaptations of meaning that re-surface generation after generation.

Growing Up “Canadian” an interactive arts event is ON Saturday March 3rd

According to Statistics Canada, Filipino-Canadian youth are not, on average, doing well in education and employment after they leave high school. Members from the Filipino Youth Transitions in Canada project are conducting research to find out why this is so.

Initial findings from the research bring to light issues facing Filipino-Canadian youth such as religion; relationships with parents and peers; discrimination; as well as challenges to belonging.

On Saturday, March 3rd, in partnership with Kapisanan, FYTiC will be hosting an intimate showcase featuring Filipino Canadian spoken-word artists, playwrights, and visual artists. These artists will be showcasing artwork that speak to the research themes and what it means for them to grow up “Canadian”.

We invite you to take part in this community event!
