Growing Up “Canadian” an interactive arts event is ON Saturday March 3rd

According to Statistics Canada, Filipino-Canadian youth are not, on average, doing well in education and employment after they leave high school. Members from the Filipino Youth Transitions in Canada project are conducting research to find out why this is so.

Initial findings from the research bring to light issues facing Filipino-Canadian youth such as religion; relationships with parents and peers; discrimination; as well as challenges to belonging.

On Saturday, March 3rd, in partnership with Kapisanan, FYTiC will be hosting an intimate showcase featuring Filipino Canadian spoken-word artists, playwrights, and visual artists. These artists will be showcasing artwork that speak to the research themes and what it means for them to grow up “Canadian”.

We invite you to take part in this community event!

Filipinos Represent! Canada’s Top 25 Immigrants 2012

WRITTEN IN ENGLISH AND TAGALOG BY MARICAR RANADA, CLUTCH VOL.1 PARTICIPANT

Caroline Mangosing is a finalist in Canada’s Top 25 Immigrants. She was nominated by CLUTCH Vol.1 participant, Maricar Ranada

One of the hardest things one person can go through is to leave their homeland and try to survive in an adopted one. As an immigrant in this multicultural land, I was not an exception to that. I too had a challenging time settling in Canada.

In our life’s journey, we meet people who share our own story, who help us grow, who inspire us. About five years ago, only months after I arrived in Canada, I met one. I met Caroline Mangosing, the co-founder of a Filipino arts-based, youth-focused center, Kapisanan.

Clutch Vol 4: Fake ID

WRITTEN BY CLUTCH VOL. 4 PARTICIPANT, VICTORIA MARIE SAWAL

On Yonge street alone there are more than 7 places that a minor could buy their very own fake ID. They could change their name, change their height, address and obviously their age; anything that is unsatisfactory to their standards. Customers are willing to cough up 20 to 60 dollars (depending on the quality they’re looking for); all in efforts to be something they aren’t. The funny thing is, these ID’s are most likely being used by these people, to be in places they don’t belong.

Brian Bantugan, our Filipino History workshop facilitator

Every Saturday, I travel from Durham to downtown to participate in workshops with my Clutch Vol. 4 sisters. I don’t pass Yonge street at all, but it came to my attention after one of the most surprising workshops of Clutch that every single person carries a fake ID, with out even knowing.

On December 10th, Brian Bantugan, a graduate from UP (University of the Philippines), facilitated a workshop entitled “Filipino History”. Clutch workshops have a knack for catching us girls off guard, but this time it left us wide-eyed and more curious than ever!
