From Vintage to Handmade: It’s Your Life Handmade

Nicole Tirona | It’s Your Life Handmade @ Kapisanan

Some of you may have noticed that Pretty Freedom, the resident inside KAPISANAN’s store-front Vinta Gallery, has grown up and moved next door. We love it so much that they stayed so close by #LittleManila.

One of Pretty Freedom’s favourite consignee was a gorgeous line of hand-made jewelry by Filipina-Canadian artisan, Nicole Tirona. Her Vancouver-based company, It’s Your Life Handmade, got so much love from Toronto, it spurred a relocation for the artist and the company.

Don’t get turned away at the door!

Livin' La Vida Imelda by Carlos Celdran

“Disco, dictators, and dirty laundry, completely Imeldific”

The shoes, the sleeves, the stunning political cultural comeback — Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines, has become an unlikely cultural icon in recent years, inspiring David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, as well as other international playwrights, photographers, and artists.

Get to the heart of what makes her so compelling In “Livin’ La Vida Imelda”, an irreverent and insightful performance that will take you one of the most controversial periods in Philippine history, the 1970’s. It’s the tumultous era of the Cold War, Martial Law, bell-bottom jeans, & Miss Universe, all seen through the life and ambitions of the lady who defined it, Imelda Romualdez Marcos.

Visiting artist Carlos Celdran normally gives this performance / walking tour at the Cultural Centre of the Philippines, one of Imelda’s legacies, and he’ll recreate this setting at Twist Gallery in collaboration with Kapisanan’s resident artists, Kristina Guison and Eric Quebral.

Presented by Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture
at Twist Gallery 1100 Queen St. West, Toronto
